London - A Hindu temple, claimed to be the first "eco-temple" in the world with solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system, opened in northwest London.
The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Kingsbury blends traditional Indian architecture and carvings with ecologically friendly technology to create what is thought to be the world’s first "eco-temple" by design.
The temple's inauguration marked the beginning of a six-day festival with evening celebrations including dance and music performances, The temple was opened in the presence of the head of the temple committee Acharya Swamishree Maharaj. A collection of books on Vedanta philosophy in various Indian languages was also launched during the function. The mayor of London, Boris Johnson described the new temple and facilities as "stunning and impressive" during his visit.
“This place is not only one of London’s main tourist attractions, it is surrounded on all sides by values that we, as British Indians, hold so dear, and are promoted by Acharya Swamishree Maharaj,” said Mahesh Varsani, the temple trustee.
The new site includes a multi-function hall with facilities for sports and receptions, which will be made available to members outside the internal community under the terms of the temple's development.
Just prior to the temple's inauguration, over 150 pipers from various countries around the world including India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and nations from East Africa and Europe participated in a peace parade towards Parliament as a display of multinational and multicultural cohesion. The parade started near Piccadilly and culminated in Parliament Square.
“Today, we bring another unique spectacle to the heart of this iconic city. The Trafalgar Square has seen countless demonstrations but will never have seen this kind of celebration of peace, harmony and brotherhood,” said the Acharya.
