A wife of Lyle Jeffs, the unofficial leader of the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) has filed for divorce in Utah. In her petition she has also made shocking accusations against the church.
The 58-year-old Charlene Wall Jeffs is making rape accusations against the FLDS church, where supreme leaders are referred to as the "Priesthood," one of the largest Mormon fundamentalist denominations in the U.S. She says the church has become more "disturbing" since her husband took over from his brother, Warren Jeffs, who is serving life plus 20 years in Texas for two felony counts of child sexual assault.
One of Lyle Jeffs' nine wives, Charlene Jeffs married her husband in 1983. Two of the accusations she made in her petition, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune, are shocking in nature and, if true, depict the church — already known for its abusive treatment of women — in an even uglier light.
Mrs. Jeffs, who wrote she was made to leave the FLDS compound in Hilldale, Utah last September for being "unrighteous," spoke of a newer practice in the church whereby a "seed-bearer" impregnates another man's wife. One or more seed-bearers, she said, rape a woman while her husband sits in the room and watches.
"It is the husband's responsibility to hold the hands of their wives while the seed bearer 'spreads his seed,' " she wrote in her petition. "In layman terms, the husband is required to sit in the room while the chosen seed bearer, or a couple of them, rape his wife or wives."
Another practice is called the "Law of Sarah," which forces women to have sex with one another in preparation for having sex with a waiting seed-bearer, she said.
The seed-bearer doctrine has been written of before; in 2014 two University of Utah researchers published a paper based on interviews with sect members that detailed seed-bearing, saying only 15 men are permitted by the Priesthood to become seed-bearers and have sex with women.
Charlene Jeffs has 10 children with her husband and is afraid her youngest two, a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, will be forced to partake in these practices. Through the courts she is trying to get them back from her husband, who has them in his custody.
