article imageVideo: Pope's doves for peace in Ukraine attacked by crow & gull

By Anne Sewell     Jan 27, 2014 in World
Rome - Pope Francis was praying for peace in Ukraine on Sunday. Two children accompanying him released two white doves, which were instantly, brutally attacked by a seagull and a crow.
The incident followed shortly after the Pope's Angelus prayer on Sunday. In front of tens of thousands of people in St Peter's Square, a seagull and a crow brutally attacked the two white doves.
Apparently the crow pecked at one of the doves, while the other struggled to break free from the sea gull, losing feathers in the fight. It is unknown whether the birds survived the incident.

The Pope was calling for dialogue between the Ukraine government and its opposition on Sunday, with the release of the birds a symbolic hope for peace in the protest-ravaged country.
"I hope for constructive dialogue between the institutions and civil society, and that - without recourse to violent action - the spirit of peace and the search for common good may prevail in the hearts of all," the Pope said following prayers.
"I am close in my prayers to Ukraine, in particular to those who have lost their lives, and their families," he added.
Reportedly this isn't the first time something has gone wrong with a Papal symbolic release of doves. According to The Local, in January 2012, Pope Benedict released doves, which then immediately turned around and re-entered the window from which they had been released.
St Peter's Square does not appear to be the luckiest place for white doves and some people are wondering if there is something a little prophetic about the whole incident, and others how ironic it was.
The video above shows the Pope and the two children releasing the doves. It then ends with images of the doves being attacked by the crow and seagull.
