article imageWhite House to the rescue: Will aid honey bees with new policy

By Brian Booker     May 19, 2015 in Politics
The White House is wading into yet another battle, but this time it's not the Islamic State, a combative Congress, or any of the other usual suspects that find themselves in the cross hairs of POTUS. Instead, Obama is taking up the cause of honey bees.
The White House has unveiled a “National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and other Pollinators.” The policy specifically cites monarch butterflies and honey bees as being under threat and outlines a variety of goals to protect both of these key pollinators.
Among other things, the strategy calls for the restoration and enhancement of 7 million plus acres of land for pollinators over the next 10 years. The strategy also calls for a reduction in “over-wintering” deaths and addressing other threats.
POTUS's policy also outlines changes to how office buildings are landscaped, how forests are replanted after forest fires, and other key things.
Protecting honey bees has become a priority due to a sharp and mysterious drop-off in bee populations across the United States, and indeed the world. Approximately one decade ago experts began to notice a massive die-off in bees, now termed “Colony Collapse Disorder.”
To this day experts are not fully sure of what is causing the die-off, and likely several factors are at play. The increased use of pesticides, mite infections, global warming and a loss of habitat may all be contributing to the collapse of bee colonies.
Honey bees are a vital part of the ecosystems they inhabit. Numerous plants rely on honey bees to spread their pollen and thus facilitate reproduction.
The continued loss of honey bees could threaten entire ecosystems, and valuable crops. Both Democrats and Republicans have voiced support for addressing the issue, suggesting that the Obama administration may be able to pass meaningful laws and policies to address it.
