The apparent embarrassing loss of classified material, including the plans to Trump Tower, has been reported by the BBC. If the plans have fallen into the hands of terrorists then the security of Donald Trump (when not in the White House) and his family could be compromised (Trump’s wife Melania and their son Barron live in the New York residency). The actions taken will probably be to revamp the security systems; nevertheless, a possible security risk could remain.
U.S. media are reporting that the laptop was taken on Thursday morning. In what seems like a major error on the part of the security services, CNBC report that the car was parked in the driveway of the agent’s home (in the New York City borough of Brooklyn). No further information has been officially confirmed other than the laptop contains “sensitive information” along with detailed plans of the Trump building. Unofficially, ABC News have a source who says the laptop contains details on the criminal inquiry into former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of private email.
A Trump spokesperson has stated that New York police are examining surveillance footage to try to identify a suspect. Meanwhile attempts are being made to render the information on the stolen laptop useless (it seems the computer is encrypted and authorities should be able to wipe the hard drive remotely) as well as to increase data security should any of the information from the laptop have been extracted.
