Op-Ed: Trump/Cruz antics — Should the 2016 election be held in a zoo?

The fallout from this wonderful attack of conservative “elitism” is that Cruz has called Trump a sniveling coward, and someone else took responsibility for posting a not-very-flattering pic of Cruz’s wife next to ex-model Melania.
The question, obviously, is where these two spreaders of wisdom among other things go from here — each other’s kids? Their pets? It’s all further downhill from here.
A bigger question:
Why is arguably the most undignified, abusive and downright regressive nomination in history happening at all? Why is it suddenly OK to act like rabid rats per press release or speech when running for office?
Trump is just a symptom. He’ll be gone in four or eight years, if he wins, and apart from the chaos he’ll cause, he’ll just be another episode in The Great American Nightmare of the last few decades.
The GOP has never really recovered from being disembowelled by the Tea Party owned by the Kochs. The Kochs don’t like Trump as a threat to their power base, (still think you’re living in a democracy?) but there’s not much they can do about him. Nor can the GOP. (Cruz is in the Tea Party zone.)
Trump will still split the vote, nominated or not against any non-Trump candidate. (Yes, guys, that’s now the definition of any alternative candidate including Cruz. Doing well, there.) If he’s not nominated, he could cause a protest vote or non-vote. Disappointed/left out of the free money ride, Trump supporters will probably never forgive the GOP.
It’s the political system which has failed, as much as the GOP. Amid all America’s suffering and humiliations, which have turned the nation into a crime scene for so many years, these brattish antics are like adding a nuke to a mass shooting.
The nomination is apparently now simply finding someone to “preside” over the next series of major catastrophes. Either an ordinary ultra-conservative, human-hating Tea Party corporate stooge, or an egomaniacal windbag motormouth who antagonizes at least one new major enemy every day.
The only good news here is that it’ll probably take a while to find anything so no-class, no-dignity to compete with 2016… Like another four years, and you can look forward to more. Every four years, more exciting pranks by your lovable lunatics. See? Life is fun!
I think Mencken’s phrase will have to be amended — “Nobody ever failed to get elected by overestimating the sanity of the American public.”
