article imageSmall drone flies onto White House grounds and lands in the night

By Marcus Hondro     Jan 26, 2015 in Politics
What the Secret Service describes as a small drone flew in from somewhere and landed on the White House lawns early today. The origin of the device is unknown but officials are looking to determine where it came from and may already have a suspect.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are in India while their two children, Malia and Sasha, remain behind in Washington. However, the Secret Service said the drone posed no danger to anyone at or around the White House.
The drone — not to be confused with a large, military drone — was much smaller, just two feet wide. Security officials at the White House said that it was a "quad copter" of a type easily purchased by the public.
The drone was seen flying onto the grounds at approximately 3:08 Monday morning. It crashed in the southeastern area of the White House grounds and security officials went out looking for it. There was a light snow upon the grounds and it took them up to two hours to recover the drone.
“There was an immediate alert and lockdown of the complex until the device was examined and cleared,” Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said. “An investigation is underway to determine the origin of this commercially available device, motive, and to identify suspects.”
They have said that already they are interviewing a "person of interest" in the affair.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest in New Delhi said the drone posed no threat. “There is a device that has been recovered by the Secret Service at the White House,” Earnest said. “The early indications are that it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat to anybody at the White House.”
Though this is not being considered a lapse in security, there were two such lapses last September. In one a man carrying a knife scaled the fence of the White House and made it into the building, though security detected him and easily took him down.
In another, in Atlanta an armed security guard from a private firm was allowed on the same elevator as President Obama.
