article imageOp-Ed: Republicans want to give women the right to buy birth control

By Dan Arel     Jul 17, 2014 in Politics
This week Republicans introduced a rather useless bill to answer the Democrat’s response on the highly unpopular Hobby Lobby decision passed down by the Supreme Court earlier this month.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the party intends to pass a law allowing women to buy their own birth control. Oddly enough, women are already able to buy their own birth control and this law amounts to absolutely nothing.
"We plan to introduce legislation this week that says no employer can block any employee from legal access to her FDA-approved contraceptives," McConnell told a group of reporters. "There's no disagreement on that fundamental point."
Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), who joined McConnell at his press conference, said the bill is intended to make the political point that "women have the same rights today to access contraception as they did before Obamacare was passed, and before the Hobby Lobby decision."
The whole bill makes no sense and is nothing but a political distraction to make it seem as though Republicans care about women’s health care rights, and the only political point it makes is that the Republican Party is clueless on health care now and the Affordable Care Act.
Republicans in the Senate blocked a bill put forward by the Democrats that would have overturned the Supreme Courts decision that would state that no for-profit company can opt out of federal law based on its owners' religious beliefs.
Women’s health care rights will not be realized until the Hobby Lobby decision is fully overturned and women are no longer slaves to their bosses religious beliefs.
