Parents sue Maryland high school over religious indoctrination

Thomas More Law Center has filed a lawsuit on behalf of John Wood, a former Marine, and his wife Melissa. They are accusing Charles County public schools in Maryland of subjecting their daughter to Islamic indoctrination and propaganda.

According to the Washington Free beacon, the trouble began when the Woods discovered that their daughter’s World History class was having students complete homework assignments that reportedly promoted Islam in ways the family felt were unacceptable.

The Woods family felt that the school was forcing the students to learn Islamic propaganda, and forcing them to write out the Islamic creed “Shahada,” which says, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” The students were also required to recite the Five Pillars of Islam, says the family.

Fox News is reporting that Thomas More president Richard Thompson said, “Defendants forced Wood’s daughter to disparage her Christian faith by reciting the Shahada, and acknowledging Mohammad as her spiritual leader.” According to the Thomas Moore Law Center, forcing a non-Muslim to recite the Shahada is enough to convert them to Islam.

“The course also taught false statements such as Allah is the same God worshiped by Christians and Islam is a ‘religion of peace,'” Thompson said.

A spokesperson for Charles County Public Schools told Fox News they had not seen the lawsuit and had no comment. Also named in the lawsuit were the Charles County Board of Education, principal Evelyn Arnold and vice-principal Shannon Morris.

The Thomas Moore Law Center lawsuit also pointedly mentioned that Christianity was taught for only one day while Islam instruction lasted two weeks.

“During its brief instruction on Christianity, Defendants failed to cover any portion of the Bible or other non-Islamic religious texts, such as the Ten Commandments,” the lawsuit states. “Instead, the class included disparaging remarks about Christianity and the Pope.”

Thompson, according to the Daily Mail, alleges the school failed to clearly tell parents their children would be studying Islam. But according to course guidelines sent to WTOP.com, the school does have curriculum requirements for the World History class.

“The particular unit in question is on the formation of Middle Eastern empires in which students learned the basic concepts of the Islamic faith and how it, along with politics, culture, economics and geography, contributed to the development of the Middle East,” the statement said.

The statement also pointed out that “Other religions are introduced when they influence or impact a particular historical era or geographic region, and when learning about the development of China and India, students examine Hinduism and Buddhism.”

All the news sources mentioned the family are devout Christians, and the father was a Marine who was deployed during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He was also deployed to the Pentagon as a firefighter during the September 11 attacks.

The father also contends in the lawsuit that when he called the school to ask that his daughter be exempt from studying Islam and be given an alternative assignment, he was told that if she didn’t complete the work, she would receive a failing grade. Mr. Wood also said he was told he was not allowed on the school grounds, ever.

“Parents must be ever vigilant to the Islamic indoctrination of their children under the guise of teaching history and multiculturalism. This is happening in public schools across the country. And they must take action to stop it,” Thompson said, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

NOTE: Take a moment to look at the Thomas Moore Law Center’s “Exhibit 1 and Exhibit 2.” The papers show the actual lesson plan.
