Op-Ed: Trump’s ‘Tweet-storm’ highlights how embarrassing he really is

It’s a real shame when the leader of our country is so unskilled in how to get a point across that it takes a whole team of advisors to explain what he is really saying. Yet Trump is given free reign to tweet ignorant rants and threats to anyone and everyone, including twisting the words of London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Every time Donald Trump tweets anything, he shows the world how uncouth and lacking in social skills he really is. We already know from listening to his campaign rants that he is vulgar and thoroughly enjoys pitting races, religions and political parties against each other, so showing his true self on social media is not a stretch.

The latest terror attacks in London were gruesome and at the same time, heroic. The police response was impeccably correct and the public is to be praised for their calm and smart actions in the midst of the confusion and fear. Like people all across the world, I let London know my heart was with them, feeling their pain.

But along came Trump – After a Tweet was put out by Lewis Lukens, the charge d’affaires and acting Ambassador to the American Embassy in London condemning the attacks and commending the mayor of London, tweeting: “I commend the strong leadership of the @MayorofLondon as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack” -Trump began his attack.

In case you noticed that Lukens is the acting ambassador, this is because the embassy happens to be leaderless. Trump has yet to name an Ambassador to the Court of St. James, which seems to be the course he has taken in not naming heads of many departments and agencies in his administration over the past four months since taking office.

It is incomprehensible to me, and to the world, for that matter, that our president should go off on another tweet-rampage, a totally uncalled-for storm of comments on his Twitter account immediately after the news of the London attack hit. The strange thing about all this is that Trump has 16 intelligence agencies and instant access to Number 10 Downing Street at his disposal, yet he tweeted out an unconfirmed story from the Drudge Report, which said that a suspected terrorist attack was taking place.

Fake news? Yes, at the time it was only speculation. Who passed along the fake news? Trump himself. But shortly after that tweet, Trump got on his high-horse, tweeting: “We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”

Trump, the real trump, emerged during that tweet. His administration has gone to great lengths to whitewash his spontaneous remarks, especially those on his travel ban that have caused legal issues not once, but twice, now. The use of the words, “travel ban” is the reason US district court judges halted his plan to keep nationals from six Muslim-majority nations out of the US.

However, on Monday, Trump was still going strong, tweeting: “People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN!” And that tweet wasn’t enough – He tweeted: “The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C.”

Was Trump finally tweeted out? No, he then tweeted: “The Justice Dept. should ask for an expedited hearing of the watered down Travel Ban before the Supreme Court – & seek much tougher version!” And to get the very last word in on the subject, he tweeted: “In any event we are EXTREME VETTING people coming into the U.S. in order to help keep our country safe. The courts are slow and political!”

But amid all the blather over his travel ban, the president still had time to disparage the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, tweeting: “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his “no reason to be alarmed” statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!” The reality of that tweet is that Trump took the “no reason to be alarmed” phrase out of context, turning it into a slam against the mayor.

So we have come to the point where Trump has alienated every nation in the world against the U.S. with the exception of Russia and the Philippines, and that is only because their leaders are despots. I will not call President Trump a despot, but I will say that anyone who gets in bed with people like Putin and Duarte is questionable, to say the least, and it is embarrassing.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
