Op-Ed: Sen. Marco Rubio gave up Florida; state will give him up Tuesday

The Florida senator seems incapable of making the connection that his poor work ethic in the U.S. Senate is the main reason he is about to lose his own state’s primary.
Mr. Rubio is a capable young politician who did good work in Florida as a representative and House Speaker. Had he taken his job as U.S. Senator a bit more seriously, he would no doubt make a good candidate for president in 2020. However, after Florida voters gave him the U.S. Senate, Mr. Rubio failed to go to work on a regular basis. By the time he was halfway through his first term in the Senate, he was somewhere else in mind and spirit. Try not showing up and not participating at work in private industry, where such behavior is a firing offense. While Mr. Rubio does not seem to think his lack of work ethic in the Senate is important on the campaign trail, the results of his presidential bid tells quite a different story — one to which he should pay attention for future reference.
If the relatively young Florida senator will not represent Florida by showing up to do his job in the Senate, why should Florida’s voters assume he will represent them earnestly as president? Now, with his campaign sagging like a broken floor truss, Mr. Rubio is urging his supporters in Ohio to back Gov. John Kasich in that state’s primary on Tuesday. At best, this political strategy is transparently desperate. Mr. Rubio would have done better telling Kasich’s supporters in Florida to vote for him — since every national poll has him losing his home state. For Rubio, there is no reason to concern himself with Ohio’s electoral outcome on Tuesday because if he doesn’t win Florida his campaign is finished. To boot, he voluntarily gave up the Florida Senate seat he was so graciously awarded on November 2, 2010.
Marco Rubio owes his Florida constituency an apology. He asked for, and Florida voters bestowed on him, the great honor of representing Florida in the U.S. Senate. Little more than halfway through his term he announced he wouldn’t seek reelection and a short time later he decided his job as a U.S. senator was a part-time gig on his way to the presidency. However, that’s not the way the world works. Florida is home to one of the largest and most diverse populations in the country. His supporters believed in the stoic campaign speeches he made while campaigning for the Senate; Floridians feel gypped.
Leaving his Florida Senate seat so early and with so few accomplishments was a kick in the teeth to many Rubio supporters. Nevertheless, his rejection of the post he convinced Floridians he cared so much about is only part of the problem with his current presidential bid. Failing to go to work on a regular basis was a slap in the face of his supporters and he should not expect Florida to turn the other cheek on Tuesday.
