article imageOp-Ed: Rialto Calif. School District ignorant on Holocaust

By Larry Clifton     May 5, 2014 in Politics
Rialto - It began after Rialto Unified School District officials approved a lesson plan for its students to argue that there was no Holocaust.
Imagine eighth-grade students being required by a school district in the U.S. to deny that millions of European Jews were used as subjects for deadly medical experiments, tortured unmercifully, burned alive in gas furnaces and left to starve or die of illnesses in cattle-cars and prison camps by Nazis and Nazi sympathizers.
The Rialto school district first responded to predictable outrage over the “debate” by pointing out that the Holocaust assignment was “merely a political scheme created to influence public emotion and gain,” according to the San Bernardino Sun.
Today, nearly a week later, it succumbed to public outrage after opposition lit fire to the gross absurdity and questionable politics of the inhumane, failed assignment,
Folks, yours truly is not Jewish, only a run-of-the-mill WASP - but he has the humanity, the capacity for legitimate outrage, the commonality with all peoples to understand the deeply inbred callousness and utter disregard for humanity that produced such a useless and insensitive assignment for the students of California.
Only after a public firestorm broke out did interim school superintendent Mohammed Z. Islam relent by removing the district’s bizarre lesson plan that asked students to argue that the Holocaust never happened.
Revisionists have their place in education, but forcing students, a captive audience, to argue that the Holocaust never happened is insane, and a deliberate attempt to implement a sick, cultural agenda.
While the superintendent’s name may sound Middle Eastern, it's the same voice of clansmen from the film Green Fried Tomatoes. To that point, it is not difficult to imagine the Rialto school board burning crosses at nearby Jewish synagogues to provoke debate.
World history does not ask us to take the Holocaust by faith or to revise it away. There are volumes of historical data that was collected in real time, reams of documents, photos and videos of Jewish children and fathers and mothers being branded, abused and murdered in gas ovens simply because they were Jewish.
Going forward, there is good reason for sensible people in the Rialto district to question the fundamental sensibility of the Rialto Unified School District administration. It is unconscionable that in the year 2014, a California school superintendent can be so callous and lacking in compassion as to not condemn the very notion of an assignment designed to deny the horrific and unforgivable horror that is and always will be the Holocaust.
If Rialto Calif. school board members personally doubt the Holocaust happened, perhaps they need remedial education more than their students.
