Op-Ed: Problems with ISIL? Just Nuke ’em says Republican Senator

Here’s what he had to say, according to Politicus:

“Bible Gateway Passage: 1 John 4:10. God is love. John 7-10: My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God. The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love — so you can’t know him if you don’t love…”

Well, he certainly has circular thinking down pat. So he’s all “love your brother” one minute and kill, kill, kill the next.

“A strategically placed nuclear weapon would save the lives of our soldiers and quickly turn things around…”

And then:

“With ISIS spreading all over the Middle East and Africa and Islamic Extremists carrying out violence in Europe, the United Kingdom and even in the United States, I wonder why the civilized world just sits by when we have weapons that could wipe out these barbarians where they are concentrated? I believe it is time to annihilate the strongholds and pursue the rest till we have them all captured or killed. A strategically placed nuclear weapon would save the lives of our soldiers and quickly turn things around. It is time for the insanity to be stopped.

There is just nothing that says “love your brother” like bombing him into infinity.

But let’s not forget the fact that the U.S. helped create the monster now known as ISIS. As Counter Punch notes, the CIA was in bed with extremist Islam as far back as the Cold War era and that begat the likes of Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

Rapert may be a small-timer, but throwing nuclear bombs into a fire isn’t going to put that fire out.

Matt Campbell’s Blue Hog Report puts Rapert pretty well into perspective.

Just for fun, let’s go over some of the dumber aspects of Rapert’s brilliant idea, nicely pointed out by Blue Hog:

• Rapert writes this as if he thinks nuking ISIS would be a walk in the park, easy as targeting a specific house and blowing it to smithereens and not worrying about anything else. As Blue Hog puts it, “Which, honestly, is about as far from reality as one can get in this context.” It notes that ISIS occupies an area roughly the size of Pennsylvania and has footholds into an area that’s vastly larger. There’s not even the tiniest chance that Rapert’s brain fart, I mean plan, would wipe out ISIS or convince them to give up.

• Okay, let’s say the U.S. lost its collective mind and followed Rapert’s dumb idea. This would kill thousands of innocent civilians, cause permanent disfigurement and health problems for untold thousands more, and frankly, wouldn’t be looked upon kindly by the region as a whole. Russia, China, and other places who don’t particularly love the U.S. would probably not be fond of this either. As Blue Hog puts it: “Are we supposed to assume that everyone would say ‘whoa…check out America! If they’re listening to the Bigot of Bigelow (their term for Rapert), we better fall in line!”?

• Rapert also seems to think it’s okay to break a law every now and then. Since Missouri v. Holland in 1920, Blue Hog reports, it has been settled that a validly entered treaty has the same force and effect as the Constitution. The U.S. is included in a number of non-proliferation and other treaties that preclude the use of nuclear weapons. But who cares about federal law? Heck, we’re only talking about nuclear weapons, after all.

Rapert has also tried his best to de-fund Planned Parenthood and is the architect of the most restrictive abortion law to date, Reality Check reports.

He introduced a bill that would have prevented state or federal funding to any entity that performs or offers referrals for abortions, and that Reality Check says, was a direct attack on the state’s Planned Parenthood clinics. Fortunately for women in Arkansas, that bill was torpedoed.

But really, there’s nothing particularly special about Rapert. He’s just one of an entirely too-big bunch of rotten bananas who currently reside in the GOP. He’s part of a group that’s anti-science, anti-climate change, anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-middle class, anti-poor, and anti-African American. They are a whole bunch of nothings who have made these issues into great big somethings. They have groveled at the feet of their corporate masters and used each and every one of these issues to do great harm.

That’s what makes them scary.
