They resigned, and received typical neocon online harassment ever since. According to former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields, she was allegedly assaulted by a Trump organizer. Trump’s organizer denied it. Fields posted a picture of bruises on her arms to prove it. Breitbart did nothing. Breitbart Editor at Large Ben Shapiro also resigned in protest when Breitbart refused to support her. He’s not too popular, either. Exactly what a guy with a Jewish name is doing working for an Anti-Semitism R Us right wing political site is anyone’s guess, but he, inevitably, was called a “Jew traitor” by the Breitbart busy bees for sticking up for his principles.
Twitter posts related to Fields have included: “You should be murdered and raped and your corpse should be thrown in to a holocaust furnace.” Cute, eh?
Buzzfeed comments were full of hate messages, too. Everyone everywhere with a social media account is apparently an expert on exactly what happened, with predictable results. The alleged victim is automatically guilty in this pattern of abuse. There’s even suddenly a YouTube video which “proves” her allegations were false. Fields has been accused of lying, making up the incident, etc.
The message for right wing journalists
The hate campaign created by this relatively minor incident sends another, very unambiguous message — step out of line and this can happen to you. Nobody who’s watched neocon media at work in the last eight years should be surprised. This is the line, it cannot be crossed, or you’ll get the treatment.
Another message, from the other side where people do real journalism, and it’s pretty simple — this hate mob mentality/insanity is exactly what you guys are supporting.
It’s been going on for years. How could you not know that? Are you really surprised that Fields and Shapiro are getting this kind of treatment? Are you contributing to it? Because it can happen to you.
Meanwhile, Breitbart has taken down a “smear” article regarding the two wayward humans. The Daily Beast reports that another anti-Trump conservative, Bethany S. Mandel, received so much abuse from Trump supporters that she’s purchased a handgun.
Look forward to eight years of Trump, guys. It’ll be such fun, particularly for you.
