article imageOp-Ed: Boehner - U.S. may have 'no choice' on combat troops fighting ISIL

By John Presta     Sep 29, 2014 in Politics
Washington - House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) appeared Sunday on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, and said that the United States may have no other choice than to send combat ground troops to fight the war against ISIL in Iraq and Syria.
"At the end of the day, I think it's gonna take more than airstrikes to drive them outta there," said Boehner. "At some point, somebody's boots have to be on the ground." In the interview with Stephanopoulos, Boehner acknowledged that President Barack Obama opposes the use of U.S. combat troops, but added that if allies do not step up with troops on the ground, "we have no choice."
"These are barbarians. They intend to kill us. And if we don't destroy them first, we're gonna pay the price," Boehner added. However, Boehner was contradicted by Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken, who reiterated on CBS' Face the Nation that will not be the case. "Again, we're not going to repeat what we did before: hundreds of thousands of Americans on the ground in the Middle East getting bogged down. That's exactly what al-Qaeda wants. That's not what we're going to do."
However, Boehner also said he is open to being called into special session should Obama request it. “I’d be happy to (call House into special session),” he said.
“The president has not done that. He believes he has authority under existing resolutions to do what he’s done.”
“You don’t agree?” Stephanopoulos asked.
“I think he does have the authority to do it, but the point I’m making is this is a proposal that the Congress ought to consider,” Boehner said.
President Obama was interviewed by Steve Kroft on CBS News' 60 Minutes. Obama told Kroft, "That's why what we have to do is rather than play whack-a-mole and send U.S. troops wherever this occurs, we have to build strong partnerships. We have to get the international community to recognize this is a problem. We've got to get Arab and Muslim leaders to say very clearly, 'These folks do not represent us. They do not represent Islam,' and to speak out forcefully against them."
