article imageLimbaugh claims Williams' suicide due to 'leftist worldview'

Comments made by the often-maligned conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh have sparked disbelief and ire from people around the world.
Although media coverage of the death of any celebrity is nothing unusual, a Limbaugh listener called the show on Tuesday and asked if Limbaugh thought the media was covering the death of Robin Williams for "political reasons." Limbaugh initially responds by saying:
"You know, I'm the guy that says there's politics in everything and you've gotta be able to spot it, and you're right, there is here."
After a commercial break, Limbaugh again says he believes there are political reasons for the coverage, before saying "I don't think that the politics is driving it." Limbaugh continues by saying:
"What is the left’s world view in general? If you had to attach not a philosophy but an attitude to a leftist worldview, it's one of pessimism and darkness, sadness. They're never happy, are they? He made everybody else laugh but was miserable inside. I mean, it fits a certain picture, or a certain image that the left has."
Limbaugh then pointed to a Fox News report which cites unnamed sources as saying Williams was struggling to live up to "exceedingly high expectations." The report also quotes sources as saying Williams never got over the loss of friends Christopher Reeve, Andy Kaufman and John Belushi, and suffered from survivor's guilt. Limbaugh then said:
"He could never get over the guilt that they died and he didn't. Well, that is a constant measurement that is made by political leftists when judging the country."
The comments have ignited a social media firestorm, with hundreds of Twitter posts criticizing Limbaugh for his comments. Some have called Limbaugh insensitive and ignorant, while others claim it is yet another desperate attempt to improve ratings.
There does not appear to be any evidence to support Limbaugh's theory either. In fact, according to a University of California Riverside study, political conservatism played a key role in suicides. The study analyzed mortality data from the U.S. Multiple Cause of Death Files from 2000 through 2004. States that overwhelmingly voted for George Bush in the 2000 had the highest number of suicides. A Washington Post article states that when looking at data from 1900 through 2007, suicide rates climbed to epidemic levels after the election of a Republican president.
As one Twitter post stated, Limbaugh may want to examine the facts first, and then seek some therapy himself.
