article imageOp-Ed: Iowa Sen. candidate 'castrated hogs;' would 'cut pork'

By Larry Clifton     Mar 26, 2014 in Politics
Des Moines - Many Senate races are highly competitive this year, including primaries. However, Joni Ernst, a Republican candidate in the Iowa GOP Senate primary, is not a political pig wearing lipstick.
In fact, the state senator and former hog farmer knows a great deal more about cutting pork than her opponents and says so in a new political ad set to run in Iowa.
“I’m Joni Ernst. I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm. So when I get to Washington, I’ll know how to cut pork,” she says in the ad. The statement by Ernst is followed by the sound of a pig squealing.
The crowded Republican field is vying to replace Senator Tom Harkin, a Democrat who decided not to run for re-election this year.
The ad might not work so well inside the Washington Beltway where political pigs are often spotted wearing sunglasses and lipstick, but it may be just what it takes to bring people to the vote trough in Iowa. “Washington’s full of big spenders. Let’s make them squeal,” says Ernst in closing.
The ad mostly takes aim at former energy executive Mark Jacobs who has expressed support for cap and trade, Common Core, the Ryan-Murray budget compromise and raising the debt ceiling. Jacobs, one of her five Republican primary opponents, allegedly donated to Arlen Specter after Specter switched parties to become a Democrat. He reportedly claimed that one of the best things about having a strong economy is that it will provide the federal government with more tax revenue.
Most polls have Jacobs ahead in the race divided by six candidates. Ernst hopes her unusual talent for cutting pork as shown in new ad will help separate her from the rest.
Sarah Palin announced her support for Ernst today, according to the Washington Post.
Republicans, who need to pick up six seats to take control of the Senate, hope to make Democrats squeal in November by picking up Harkin’s seat.
