article imageHe'll be bacckkk: Hey, T.0., Mayor Rob Ford week away from return

By Marcus Hondro     Jun 23, 2014 in Politics
The entire world seems to know that a large part of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's term in office has been, to be kind, a bit of a circus. Ford returns from rehab a week from today so the question becomes — will their Mayor lead Toronto to crazy town again?
Ford has been in rehab at the GreeneStone rehab facility in Bala, Ont. since early May, taking the leap into getting help after a year of intense scandal that included crack cocaine smoking, drunken escapades and odd press conferences. Another drug video was alleged to have surfaced just before he made the decision to go to rehab, that along with another audio tape of the mayor drunk in public.
Last week he informed Toronto city clerk Ulli S. Watkis that he would be back on Monday, June 30. While things could soon get back to being crazy for Toronto, if Mr. Ford stays sober and off drugs that scenario is less likely as most of his escapades, not all but most, have involved what appeared to be substance abuse.
What could ramp up the craziness quotient is the fact Toronto is in the midst of an election campaign, though the election is not until October 27, and Ford is running for re-election. At a campaign rally in the city yesterday, chief rival Olivia Chow took a shot at Ford. “I was in China and they knew about (Ford),” she said. “They know a lot about two Canadians: Justin Bieber and Rob Ford.”
Surely upon his return next Monday Mayor Ford will have something to say about that. The question is will he be saying it sober and in control? And will he return to a succession of missteps, or manage to put his nose to the T.O. grindstone and simply do his job?
Starting next week China, and the rest of the world, may be hearing from Rob Ford again.
