Chicago - Chicago, infamously known for drive-by shootings, was the scene of a machete attack against two brothers waiting for a train at Chicago's Brown Line Kedzie CTA station in the Albany Park neighborhood early Monday morning.
After committing the brutal, gang-related machete attack the seven suspects - Mario Elvira; Jean Salvatierra, 23; Kevin Ramierz, 19; Kevar Preston, 20; and two 15-year-old males and one 15-year-old female - can be seen escaping into the night. The assault occurred in a well-lit area with surveillance cameras rolling.
The male victims, a 26-year-old man and his 17-year-old brother, were sitting on a bench waiting for the train shortly after midnight Monday when the group approached them and ordered them to flash a gang sign.
The brothers told him they were not part of the gang and that’s when 18-year-old Mario Elvira allegedly pulled out a machete and struck the 26-year-old victim in the head. The man remains hospitalized at Swedish Convent Hospital in stable condition. The victim sustained injuries that include a gash 6 inches long and 1 ½ inches deep that required 30 stitches to close.
The attached video shows the machete-wielding gang snatch the 17-year-old youth’s hat and his brother’s defensive reflex before one begins chopping the older brother with the machete. All seven of the suspects, their actions caught on video, were arrested a short time after the attack.
There was no apparent motive for the attack; the two victims were sitting on a bench waiting for a train minding their own business when the group confronted them. The incident occurred on the north side of Chicago near where all of the perpetrators reside, according to the report.
The suspects appeared before Judge Bourgeois in bond court Tuesday. Elvira and Preston are being held on $450,000 bond, while Salvatierra and Ramirez are being held on $250,000 bond. They are next due in court on Sept. 15.
