Edmonton - Around 1,000 people from across the province of Alberta rallied at Churchill Square in Edmonton on March 2 to protest changes to the province's pension plan, proposed by Premier Alison Redford.
The rally was organized by unions and many of those in attendance represented unions such as the Alberta Federation of Labour, Alberta Union of Public Employees, Health Sciences Association of Alberta, and others. Buses brought protesters to Edmonton from Calgary and Fort McMurray.
At issue are changes to public sector pension plans announced last week by Finance Minister Doug Horner. Starting January 1, 2016, early retirement subsidies for Public Service Pension Plan and Local Authorities Pension Plan members will be modified to a 60 and 90 factor. This means that workers must be at least 60 years old and age plus years of service must equal 90 or greater. At present, workers aged 55 with 30 or more years of service can retire with full benefits.
At the outset of the rally was a mock Academy Award presentation (March 2 was also the date for the Oscars) to Premier Alison Redford for her "two-faced" performance on Alberta's political stage.
The hour-long rally was not at all deterred by the cold temperatures, which were in excess of -30 Celcius with the wind chill. Portable heaters were set up throughout Churchill Square, and coffee, hot chocolate, hot dogs, and popcorn were served.
