A bear nicknamed "Yogi" was recently caught on video taking food from a couple's outdoor refrigerator/freezer. The bear, who shares a name with the famous cartoon character, is believed to often take food.
Yahoo News reported the owner of Powers Creek Retreat in West Kelowna, Canada, told a reporter, "We can't be 100 percent sure it's the same one, but odds are it's him."
Sandy and her husband, Tom, had previously noticed items missing from their refrigerator during the past few weeks. They said there had been no property damage, so they placed a camera to see who had been leaving their refrigerator door open a number of times at night.
Video footage showed a bear on his rear legs, opening the top freezer door and searching through a variety of frozen items. "Yogi" passed by items such as frozen vegetables and took a pie.
"He was definitely shopping for a particular item,” Tom explained. “He didn’t just take anything. I mean he threw the ice cream out. I can’t believe a bear would throw ice cream out.” Sandy told Global News, according to the Yahoo articles.
She noted the bear took taquitos, perogies and cream cheese. She added that people are wrong because they “don’t think animals are that smart. Well that proves that they are."
The New York Daily News reported the Lewises said Yogi is friendly and not a threat to campers.
"We figure he's smarter than the average bear," Sandy joked.
