World Naked Bike Ride taking off this weekend

World Naked Bike Ride

Many rides in North America will bare it all this weekend. Toronto’s Naked Bike Ride, its 11th consecutive (along with Portland, Toronto is the most ardently naked bike riding city in the world) goes on Saturday. Edmonton and Buffalo also have a ride Saturday (the first naked bike ride for each), along with Chicago and Vancouver, cities that have held rides before.

There are other naked rides going Sunday and throughout the summer in North America, while in Europe this weekend, Barcelona and Madrid in Spain have rides Saturday, as does Edinburgh and London. Last week, Thessaloniki in Greece had its eight consecutive nudey ride.

Many South American cities have hosted rides. There are some countries, Australia and New Zealand among them, that host rides in March when it’s warmer in their region. Heat helps when you’re riding in the buff.

Among other countries, there have also been naked bike rides in Belgium, Chile, Denmark, France, Finland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and Taiwan.

Bare as you Dare

The World Naked Bike Ride started in 2004 and it has gained a great deal of exposure since. An eclectic event, the organization’s website bills the WNBR as a way to protest the world’s dependance upon oil and to celebrate the human body.

Here’s this: you don’t have to ride a bike at the WNBR and many people, and their kids, walk or zoom along on skate boards or whatever conveyance they can muster. The (wonderfully colorful) website for the event says that “the only sort of bikes that would be unwelcome would be petrol-powered motorbikes and scooters.”

You don’t even have to be naked.

“Wear as little as you can while still feeling comfortable. Last year people came wearing shorts, bras, swimwear, body paint, masks etc.,” the website reads. “There will be plenty of people who will cycle fully nude, so don’t feel that it is your duty to do this if you aren’t comfortable showing all of your body. Go As Bare As You Dare!”

There have been naked rides in over 20 countries and 70 cities in the world. The largest may have been a 2011 night ride in Portland with over 8,000 riders. In most cities the event doesn’t last much more than an hour.
