Lieu, an astrophysics PhD student, was one of the few Britons who was shortlisted for the Mars One mission, which aims to send people to live and die on planet Mars.
Hundreds of thousands of people applied to leave to Mars in 2024, and 100 prospective astronauts were shortlist for the mission.
Lieu recently took to Twitter to announce that she will not be going on the mission. However, she did not give any reasons why she decided to withdraw from the one-way trip.
According to the Coventry Telegraph, Lieu did give a reason why she was pulling out. She reportedly said that she didn’t want to be tied to a contract that didn’t suit her going forward.
The group of applicants were being tested to see how they would cope in the environment on Mars, and then a final 40 will eventually be chosen to make the journey, which is going to cost around $6 billion.
Every two years groups of four are schedules to leave, and this happens from 2024. In the past, Lieu said that she was excited about the prospect of the training program.
The group would learn skills that would help them with agriculture, as well as medicine, plumbing, electronics and so forth.
Some of the challenges that the group will have to contend with on Mars includes low temperatures, radiation and there is a chance they could suffocate, starve or become dehydrated.
