91-year-old man confesses to killing a prostitute 70 years ago

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, now lives in a senior care facility in Ontario, according to Yahoo News. He reportedly went into a nearby police station to confess to the crime so many years ago, halfway across the world.

The police searched through all the unsolved murder cases from that time frame. Such records are kept on file for 100 years. Scotland Yard detectives then flew to meet the man and were able to match his statement to one file, belonging to Margaret Cook, who was 26 when she was killed.

The man searched through pictures of at least a dozen women before picking out Ms. Cook’s picture.

He claims he shot the call girl with a Russian-made Second World War pistol after she reportedly cheated him out of money. He also told investigators the alleged crime occurred outside the Blue Lagoon nightclub.

The Christian Science Monitor reported Cook’s murder was one of a series of murders of prostitutes in 1946 — a period shortly after the end of World War II. Reportedly, the police gave chase to the shooter, before he disappeared into a crowd near a subway station.

The man who confessed, if he was indeed the real murderer, might have faced the death penalty, if police had caught him. It was not outlawed in the area until 1965.

At the time of the murder, witnesses described the killer as being 25 to 30, of a medium build and wearing a Burberry-style raincoat and dark “pork pie” hat, according to the Independent.

At the time, Scotland Yard named 27-year-old building laborer Robert Currie as a person of interest. Nobody was ever arrested in connection with the crime, however, and there are no surviving witnesses, and the crime reportedly baffled detectives.

“He is not in good physical health, but is mentally alert and picked out the victim,” one source commented, according to the Christian Science Monitor. “He wanted to clear his conscience over the murder before he dies.”

The unnamed man has been called “Crock the Ripper,” by the Sun of the United Kingdom, according to the article in the Christian Science Monitor. It is not clear whether he will stand trial.
