Westwood - On July 1, 2014, a truck carrying $100,000 worth of lobster crashed into the East Street Bridge in Westwood, Massachusetts. The incident occurred around 4:50 a.m.
The driver, Todd Preson, was transporting lobster from Maine to Massachusetts, when he crashed into a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) rail bridge on East Street. In the pre-dawn light, Preson misjudged the bridge, crashing his 13 feet tall Ryder rental truck into the 10 feet high bridge.
The crash triggered a small fire which was quickly extinguished. Luckily, no one was injured. However, the bridge was shut down until 8 a.m., when engineers determined that the bridge was structurally sound.
According to CBS Boston, the driver, Todd Preson, is charged with “operating a motor vehicle negligently so as to endanger and failure to obey municipal sign.” But Preson is certainly not the only driver to fail to clear the bridge, according to local residents it happens quite regularly. In fact, another driver hit the East Street Bridge later the same day.
As a result, 7,000 pounds of lobster were marked to be discarded. But not to worry, summer in New England means there will be plenty of lobster rolls to go around.
