article imageScientist warns against replying to aliens' signals

Sydney - On Tuesday, a scientist leading efforts in Australia to find signals from alien life on other planets said people should think twice before replying.
The scientist, professor Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Melbourne, spoke about how he was excited when he learned he was going to take the lead of part of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation's search for alien life, which is financed by Yuri Milner, a billionaire from Russia.
Bailes was asked what he would do if he did find a signal that was sent by aliens and he said people need to think carefully before they send a message back.
The professor warned the aliens would likely be much more advanced than humans, considering the fact that they sent powerful signals to Earth over tens of thousands of light years. He added that this could lead humanity into disaster.
Bailes added that when it comes to civilizations contacting more-advanced civilizations, the history is not really a happy one.
As for Milner's initiative, some describe it has being the largest scientific research project that is looking for alien life. Milner described his project as bringing a Silicon Valley approach to find intelligent life. The initiative is also backed by Stephen Hawking.
Computers are going to be installed at Parkes, about 220 miles west of Sydney. These computers will be able to detect patterns or likely signals.
