Wrong way driver
There is a good news element to this story. The couple (and their baby) who took the video and who were on the highway going the same direction of the elderly woman (on the correct side) quickly called police. Traffic officers were able to get to the woman and pull her over before tragedy struck.
It happened on the 401 near Kitchener and knowing no one was hurt makes the video more watchable, though nonetheless it is still a trifle harrowing. Given that no one was hurt, the commentary of the couple making the video can be taken as being rather amusing.
Or maybe not.
The man worries someone is going to get killed and is pretty distraught. The woman makes the call to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). “It looks like an elderly lady and she’s driving very fast in the right hand lane shoulder,” she tells the dispatcher.
Confused driver
The police report that the woman behind the wheel going the wrong way — yes, in the fast lane! — was confused. Doubtless she somehow got onto the highway in the wrong lane and didn’t know how to get off. Many vehicles are seen dodging her by changing lanes; happily, all managed it without hitting another car.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told the Toronto Sun that people driving the wrong way on a highway is not uncommon. He said the woman was “confused” and after being checked over by an ambulance she was let go without being charged.
“We get pretty regular calls,” Sgt. Schmidt told the Sun. “Either drivers who are confused or impaired, getting on the highways when they’re not really knowing what’s going on.”
Comforting,no? No.
