Police in Richmond, Maine say a raven confused by its own reflection has attacked at least three cars, causing hundreds of dollars in damage.
According to Richmond Police, the first raven attack, in which a pickup truck was damaged was reported on May 21. The vehicle owner saw the bird land on his truck following which it started attacking the reflection in the window causing approximately $500 in damage. The following day, another man who lived approximately a half mile from the first complainant came into the station and told police his car was in the shop after a similar raven attack. This was followed by attacks on several other cars.
Police Chief Scott MacMaster said:
The raven does its territorial strut as he described it and when the reflection the bird was seeing did a similar strut, he started reacting by attacking whatever he could get his beak into and pulling off the rubber around the windows and windshield wipers. Identifying the bird could prove difficult. Ravens are easily mistaken for crows, but the first victim was confident in the type of bird that carried out the attack.
MacMaster advised them to contact the Maine Warden Service.
The raven is not the only animal to attack a car in town in recent weeks. In the previous case of the goats last month, police had to deal with a pair goats reportedly got loose from their yard and climbed over a neighbor’s car causing damage.
