Eckerd College's president made the statement via a letter to the student body, according to
Jezebel.
The students at Eckerd College, which is a small liberal arts school in Florida, blasted Eastman's letter, saying it was insensitive. They also said it blamed the victims of sexual assault.
The letter, which was sent out on Monday,
said that there were two simple things that could be done to tackle the problems.
Eastman suggested that students could limit the amount of alcohol they drink, and they could encourage their friends to do the same thing. He continued on to say that students could be thoughtful about the physiological effects that sexual activity can have on someone, when there is no commitment. The letter continued to say that "virtue in the area of sexuality is its own reward."
One student
said that they didn't think Eastman meant any harm by what he said, but he didn't really word things right. Another student said Eastman was asking the impossible because college students are going to do college stuff.
Eastman defended his choice of words, and said he was just trying to encourage his students to think more deeply and that the letter came from a place of compassion.
