A police chief accidentally shot himself for the second time Saturday, 15 years after shooting himself while cleaning his service weapon. On Saturday, he shot himself in the leg in a gun store.
According to Gawker, Connersville, Indiana police chief David Counceller's the latest accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound happened when the chief's sweatshirt jammed against his 40-caliber Glock's trigger. He was attempting to holster the weapon and was examining a new Glock when the incident occurred.
"It got tangled in my clothing," Counceller explained to the Indy Star. "I was wearing a sweatshirt and a fleece jacket. I felt (the gun) go in the holster and I pushed it, but it was tangled in the material which caused it to discharge. The bullet went into my leg and then into the floor."
Counceller was able to drive himself to the hospital with his minor injury. He reported that the nurses laughed at him over the incident.
“I need to pay more attention,” Counceller, 60, told the Palladium-Item, according to the New York Daily News. “I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part.”
Counceller is seeking the Republican nomination to run for sheriff in Fayette County in eastern Indiana. He explained that when he previously shot himself, he was on duty. "That one really hurt. What a way to get publicity.”
He added that a lot of people were attempting to help him get elected as sheriff.
'It is an entrance and exit wound. I'm really lucky," Councellor said, according to the Daily Mail. "It doesn't even hurt. I'd have been at work on Monday if it wasn't Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but I'll be back at work on Tuesday.'"
