Pit bulls get plenty of bad press but Ace, a pit bull in Indianapolis, is getting praise. In fact, he's being heralded as a hero in his house, his neighbourhood and in the local press. That's because Ace is credited with saving 13-year-old Nick Lamb.
Lamb is deaf and when he sleeps he'll often take off his hearing assistance implants. That's what he did Wednesday afternoon when he lay down for a nap and he says that not being able to hear prevented him from noticing when a fire broke out in his house. Ace came to his rescue though, as Nick told police and firefighters that the dog came into his room and licked his face until he woke up. Once awoken, Nick leapt into action.
It was an electrical fire that firefighters believe started in the garage. It had spread into the home by the time Ace realized action was required to get his buddy out of harm's way. The two escaped together, Nick holding a wet t-shirt over his mouth, and each was later examined and found unharmed.
No one else was in the house at the time.
“We hear of dogs barking to wake someone up during a fire but not licking their face,” Indianapolis Fire Department Captain Rita Reith told the press. "This is a positive for the pit bull community.”
And a positive for Nick Lamb and his family.
