article imageOp-Ed: Two Archives each find a new home

By Alexander Baron     Jan 28, 2014 in Odd News
Coventry - The NCROPA papers of the late David Webb were deposited with the University of Warwick before Christmas last year. They have been catalogued already.
When the actor and anti-censorship activist David Webb died in June 2012, he left not one but two legacies. The first was a large collection of theatre programmes and related documents; the second were the papers of the National Campaign for the Reform of the Obscene Publications Acts. A selection of this latter, some 2700+ documents, has now been scanned and made available on-line.
The entire archive — except for a few papers that were extracted in conjunction with Mr Webb's executor — was delivered to the University of Warwick in December, and has already been entered into its catalogue. If the wording of its entry is similar to this one, it is with good reason.
The second archive has been deposited with the University of Northampton. This is the Searchlight Archive, and is more substantial, owing not only to its having been collected over a longer period but due to the lurid and perverted imaginations of both the people it monitors and those who put it together. One of these people, indeed the main man, is co-founder of Searchlight magazine Gerry Gable, who yesterday reached the age of 77.
The casual browser is advised that "Due to the sensitive nature of the archive, access is controlled."
This is fully in accord with both his paranoia and his hyper-inflated opinion of himself. In view of some of the ludicrous material that can be found on YouTube nowadays it remains to be seen if anything published by any political organisation or activist has the power to shock anymore. Nevertheless, for those credentialed academics interested in researching fringe politics at both ends of the spectrum, it is likely to be a useful source of information, provided they bear in mind caveat emptor.
