Gansevoort - A New York woman became one of the oldest women skydivers ever when she celebrated her 100th birthday with a skydive recently. She bested former United States President George H.W. Bush who had celebrated his 90th birthday with a skydive.
According to people.com, Eleanor Cunningham of Howes Cave, New York, celebrated the birthday after kissing her seven-month-old great-great granddaughter before preparing for the event Saturday.
The jump was her third, after taking up skydiving at the age of 90. She suited up for the jump at Saratoga Skydiving in Gansevoort, New York.
The skydiver lives with her granddaughter in a home in Schoharie County. Cunningham's doctor gave her the approval for the skydive, saying she is in good health and was capable of celebrating her birthday by doing something she loves.
Saratoga Skydiving representative Dean McDonald said Cunningham is the oldest skydiving partner he has ever had.
Earlier this year former President Bush celebrated his 90th birthday with a skydive, according to a separate people.com article. America's 41st president jumped out of helicopter harnessed to a retired member of the army's helicopter team. He wore a red, white, and blue parachute.
President Bush had also celebrated his 85th birthday with a skydive and promised to celebrate his 90th the same way. His first time using a parachute was when he was shot down over the Pacific Ocean during World War II.
While Cunningham was one of the oldest women ever to skydive, the website, hispanicallyspeakingnews.com, claimed in an article August 20, 2013, that Aida Mendes of Brazil may have become the oldest female skydiver ever by jumping from a plane near the border of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
