Amanda Keown's son was denied lunch after school officials from
Dowagiac Union High School took away his lunch because he owed the school less than $5 in fees.
Keown's son,
Dominic Gant, junior at Dowagiac Union High School said he was embarrassed when school officials took his lunch in front of the entire class.
Keown was upset after her son returned home from school hungry. She contacted school officials immediately.
The mother said that school officials told her that students who owe money do not receive lunch, no matter the amount. Keown did not want to see this happen to another child at the school and decided to pay all outstanding balances of every student.
The total amount paid by Keown ended up being just short of $100.
"I realize I didn't have to do that but I don't want another kid going through what my son went through," Keown said.
In a later statement, Dowagiac Union High School principal said Gant should not have been sent home hungry but instead should have been able to add the charge to his account.
