article imageManagement of 'naturalist' town in Spain accidentally bans nudity

Vera - Sometimes "red tape" can go a tad too far. Vera, in Almeria province, southern Spain, is well-known and advertises itself as “the best naturist beach resort in the world." However, the local PP government banned the practice recently.
As reported on Digital Journal, the town even smashed the Guinness World Record for skinny dipping in July last year, with 729 naked volunteers taking the plunge for a good cause in the Mediterranean. In fact, the latest controversy has arisen just days before the anniversary of the famous skinny dip.
Vera also reportedly has the only naturist hotel in Spain, Vera Playa Club Hotel, which attracts naturists from around the world and two kilometers of sandy beach allocated just for nudists.
However, something went wrong, as the town decided to start levying fines of 100 to 300 euros ($136-$409) on tourists who take off their clothes publicly or walk around topless. Incidentally, in southern Spain is it common to see women on any beach sunbathing topless, making the new regulations even more strange.
According to the Partido Popular (PP) authorities, this was caused by a “transcription mistake” after they backed a local bylaw, prohibitng the practice, but with one exception, “item 6 in article 58.” However, apparently that clause does not exist.
PP spokesperson Antonio Fernández told Spanish daily El Mundo, “If we’ve made a mistake we’ll rectify, that’s that,” adding, “It’s obvious we’re not going to shoot ourselves in the foot.”
Deputy Mayor of the town, Juan de la Cruz Belmonte, told El Pais in English: “It was a transcription mistake not to include item 58.6. But I have issued orders to include an exception for the whole part of Vera beach that is nudist, including its streets and residential estates, where people go naked.”
Hopefully the error will soon be rectified and people will once again enjoy the nudist beach in all their glory, as they have done for decades.
