London - Those who have ever been frustrated by how slow their commute on a train may be will probably not be surprised that a video that went viral shows a man in London racing a passenger train — and winning.
The Daily Mail reported James Heptonstall, 30, a rugby player, dashed through the doors of the commuter train, known as a tube, ran up flights of steps and ran through city streets to beat the tube to the next stop.
He had left the underground train at Mansion Street was headed toward Circle Lane and was on schedule.
Heptonstall was still running but had also not crossed the finish line — which was to reenter the train after a 415 yard sprint between Mansion Street and Cannon Street — on his designated race against machine.
After running the route for 80 seconds, the rugby player swiped his Oyster card to get back on the train, almost crashing into the wall, as the train doors were closing.
He hurled back into the train in time! Passengers cheered and applauded the man they had seen leave not long before. He made it back with two seconds to spare.
Heptonstall's friend, Noel Carroll, filmed the outside portion of the video. The rugby player filmed the outside portion with a camera strapped to his head.
Many of the people who have viewed the video are reportedly commuters themselves. Heptonstall reportedly ran at 11 miles-per-hour to accomplish his stunt.
The Standard reported the rugby player climbed 75 steps and went through two ticket barriers to complete his run.
"It was just a test project," Heptonstall, an environmental consultant, explained. "We had seen some people had done endurance challenges on European transport networks and put them online but we had not seen anything done in London. I usually get the Northern line to work in the morning - it is not an enjoyable experience so I sometimes run or cycle if I can."
