article imageMan leaps from newly constructed Bay Bridge span

San Francisco - An unidentified man leapt to his death from the recently opened eastern span of the Bay Bridge on Wednesday morning at around 10 AM.
Authorities say that the man, whose name and age have not been released, threw himself from the western side of the road, near the tower of the span that connects Yerba Buena Island to Oakland.
The man is believed to be the first person to successfully commit suicide from the new span since it opened in September 2013.
Earlier this year a woman attempted to commit suicide from the new bridge but managed to survive the 191 foot plunge from the roadway to the water.
This tragic death will likely spark discussion about the need for a suicide barrier or net along the Bay Bridge's pedestrian walkway. Such a net has recently been approved for installation on San Francisco's most famous bridge, the Golden Gate.
In the meantime, the hope is that this successful suicide doesn't inspire others to make the same, fatal mistake.
