article imageMan killed 'zombie' friend after binge-watching The Walking Dead

By Anne Sewell     Oct 27, 2015 in Crime
Prewitt - In a case which will probably be the first to use a “Walking Dead” defense, a man reportedly brutally beat his friend to death after getting drunk and binge-watching the popular zombie apocalypse series.
Police in Prewitt, NM arrested 23-year-old Damon Perry Thursday last week, after he allegedly beat his friend to death believing he was turning into a zombie.
According to Newser, Perry admitted to drinking "multiple" 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor, while binge-watching “The Walking Dead” on Netflix. According to Perry, his friend began to “change into a zombie” and he beat him with various household items, including a microwave oven and an electric guitar. In true zombie-killing mode, he finished his friend off with a knife to his head.
The Grants Police Department responded to the scene after several 911 callers said a man, later identified as Perry, was running around the apartment complex, threatening neighbors with a knife. On arrival at the scene, officers found two maintenance workers holding Perry down. They entered a nearby apartment where police found Perry’s friend, brutally wounded and unresponsive. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and identified Monday as Christopher Paquinn.
KOB4 reports that when police interviewed Perry at police headquarters he explained he and his friend were drinking and binge watching the popular zombie apocalypse series on Netflix. He said Paquinn started to “change into a zombie” and tried to bite him. This was when Perry grabbed anything handy around the apartment to beat off his “zombie friend.”
Sgt Moses Marquez, who is involved in the case said that the final gruesome detail of the murder was the knife stuck in Paquinn’s head.
"If you've ever watched the show, you'd know that the only way to kill a zombie is to attack it in its head."
"Well, when police arrived in this complex, there was a knife inside the victim's head."
As reported by NBC, Marques went on to say that he believes the story behind the gruesome murder is true and that due to his inebriated state, Perry genuinely believed his friend was changing into a zombie. He said his department has never dealt with anything quite like this during his 13 years working there.
Perry is being held at the Cibola County Detention Center after being charged with an open count of murder.
