David Frasier, 49, was in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he was vacationing, when he was buried alive and killed by the sand.
According to Gawker, Frasier was trying to connect two six-foot-deep holes, which he dug earlier, by building a tunnel to connect them. He died while building the tunnel.
According to The Virginian-Pilot, the incident occurred Monday afternoon, and rescue workers were called around 2:40 p.m. When rescue workers arrived at the scene, they found Frasier's family and bystanders pulling him from the sand. A spokesman for the National Park Service said that park rangers were told by the family that he was buried for 10-15 minutes.
According to DailyMail, there was a registered nurse that was visiting the beach tried to revive Frasier, but it didn't work.
561 people across the country has died in similar circumstances between 1999 and 2010, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
