article imageMaine man withdraws $140, ATM spits out $37,000 instead

By Marcus Hondro     Apr 5, 2014 in Odd News
A man withdrawing money from an automated TD bank machine in South Portland, Maine got a little more than he asked for this week. In fact he got about 263.3 times more than he asked for.
The man had simply instructed the bank machine to withdraw the relatively modest sum of $140 from his account. Soon after, as per usual in such a transaction, a sum of bills were produced by the machine.
So far so good.
The bills, however, unlike what normally occurs, didn't stop coming. Rather than telling anyone the surprised and, dare we say, happy, man took it upon himself to grab the bills as fast as the machine could spit them out, stashing them into a shopping bag.
So far, so better. Almost.
It does appear that he was planning on keeping the steady stream of bills he was collecting but he was foiled by the woman standing next in line to use the ATM. She couldn't see exactly what he was up to but she became annoyed with having to wait so long, and more than a little suspicious, and called police on her cell. When police arrived the man was still there stuffing bills into his shopping bag.
Naturally he was caught red-handed, or green-handed, but the bank said they won't be pressing charges. The bank also noted that no customer accounts were affected and officials there called it a coding error.
In total the machine spit out $37,000, or $36, 860 more than the man walked away with.
