article imageFrench crook continues the con from behind bars

Lannemezan - A criminal, locked up in a prison cell in the south-western French town of Lannemezan, managed to continue his life of crime, despite being behind bars. However, once he was found out, he had literally nowhere to go.
The smooth-talking 35-year-old somehow managed to get hold of a mobile phone. He then put the illegal item to good use, calling elderly ladies about their "missed tax payments" or their "overdue hospital bills."
Apparently he sounded so convincing, the ladies have no problem just pulling out their credit cards and settling the so-called debt by giving the conman the details.
To get hold of suitable victims, the man simply used the mobile phone to troll around, asking directory assistance for phone numbers in Paris, preferably with old-fashioned names like Madeleine or Paulette. In other words, ladies from an older and likely more susceptible generation.
He then used a very well-rehearsed script to call the ladies about their "outstanding debt."
Not all ladies were gullible enough to give him their bank card details over the phone, it seems. However, this was no problem for the criminal. He merely organized for an accomplice in crime to visit the victim's home to collect the money.
While police do not know how much money was taken in the con, they do think that several dozen ladies were taken in by the criminal.
What gave him away was the fact that he used the victim's card details to buy various items on the Internet. This led officials who were investigating the scam right up to his prison cell door.
