Wenzhou - When a store owner catches a thief red-handed, the thief usually makes a run for it, and the crime becomes hard to prosecute. At the cost of the thief's dignity, one store owner found a bizarre and innovative way to make sure she would not run away.
In Wenzhou, a city in China's eastern Zhejiang province, clothing store owner Mei Hsueh, 39, caught female customer Yu Chung, 28, in the act of shoplifting. Moments later, a passerby caught camera footage of the furious shopkeeper pulling off the young woman's top outside the store's front entrance.
"This thief was trying to steal my clothes so I took off some of hers. She'll think twice before she does that again," said Mei.
Mei told Wenzhou police that in addition to punishing Yu for shoplifting, she took her top off to keep her from running away.
"It was meant to be a warning to all those thieves out there to show them that not all shops are a pushover."
Video footage shows Mei first pulling of Yu's shirt and then taking off her bra. Clearly humiliated, she curls up into a ball at Mei's feet begging her to give back her bra as a crowd gathers around to watch.
According to police spokesman Chi Tuan, Yu will face theft charges, but no actions will be brought against the shop owner.
Though public humiliation and removal of a thief's clothes would land a western shop owner with a plethora of charges, possibly including sexual assault, some cultures commonly turn to this method to deter theft and prevent perpetrators from escaping. Last year in Nigeria, two female undergraduate students from Ebonyi State University were beaten and stripped of their clothes by a local mob of citizens after attempting to rob a businesswoman of N1.5 million.
