Guangdong - An elementary school teacher in Southern China beat 16 of his students because they were making too much noise and disturbed his afternoon nap.
This is my weekly column FacePalm Friday, where I take a look at offbeat news. You can go and read last week's column here.
On Wednesday morning, a number of parents gathered outside the Guangzhou Bowen School in Guangdong province. They wanted to know why he struck his students from the same class at noon on Tuesday.
One parent said they do not hit their kids and wanted to know how the teacher could be so cruel, while another parent said her son came home with red marks on his back. She said her son told her he was speaking to loud during lunch and that's why the teacher hit him.
The mother's son explained that the children couldn't sleep during their nap, so they started to talk to one another. Eventually the teacher entered the classroom and told them they were being loud.
After being told they were too loud, the teacher allegedly struck each child with a broom.
Parents posted photos of their kids online, and the photos showed some of the students with welts and bruises on their backs.
The teacher admitted to beating the students because they were being too loud and they disturbed his own nap. He apologized for doing it and he has been questioned by police.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. The teacher, whose surname is Yan, has been teaching information technology at the school for two years, and it is not known at this time whether or not the school plans to take action against him.
