article imageDriver stops to save lives of ducklings, gets $44 ticket

By Mike White     Jul 22, 2014 in Odd News
A driver in New Hampshire who stopped her car in an attempt to save the lives of stranded ducklings received a $44 ticket from police for the effort. A woman in Montreal was convicted this year for two 2010 deaths after stopping for the same thing.
ABC reported Hallie Bibeau of Newfields, New Hampshire reported she had to slam on her brakes when she drove east on Route 101 on Friday to avoid hitting the birds. Bibeau said several of the ducklings and the mother were hit by a car, and the mother died. She plans to appeal her fine.
The 33-year-old New Hampshire resident called 911. She then got out of her car and captured the two living ducklings.
"I could hear them peeping, and I looked over the right hand side of the road, and I saw that their mom had been hit and was dead on the side, so I couldn't just continue on," Bibeau explained, as reported by Fox News. She told a local television station that while she waited, she saw some of the ducklings attempt to go "to the westbound lane and got run over, and it was terrible to see." A woman was convicted in Montreal earlier this year after allegedly doing the same thing, reportedly causing the deaths of two people.
Bibeau was given a ticket by a state trooper for stopping in the median. According to police, such stops are only for emergencies, and this didn't qualify.
The New York Times reported one of the ducklings died after they were taken to a wildlife rescue in Maine.
According to princegeorgecitizen.com, Emma Czornobaj, 25, was tried in Montreal after allegedly stopping her car on a highway to save ducklings. Andre Roy, 50, and his 16-year-old daughter, Jessie, on June 27, 2010, reportedly slammed into her idling car and died.
The Huffington Post reported yesterday she is appealing her conviction of criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 14 years.
