article imageDenver flight diverted after fight erupts over 'Knee Defender'

By Mike White     Aug 26, 2014 in Odd News
Denver - After a fight broke out between two passengers, over a "Knee Defender," an airplane flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Denver, Colorado, was diverted. Reportedly, the device could hinder another passenger from escaping during a flight emergency.
The Denver Post reported airplane passengers have only a limited amount to space to escape in an emergency. Escaping requires reclining one's seat, and when one passenger used the "Knee Defender," it denied another passenger the right to recline her seat.
Reportedly, the flight erupted between a male passenger, who used the device, a $21.95 gadget that affixes to a table tray being used by a passenger and a female passenger. The device won't allow the person in front of it to recline.
The Federal Aviation Administration does not itself establish rules for such devices, but it leaves it up to individual airlines to establish their own rules. According to a spokesperson for United, it prohibits use of the device, as do all major United States airlines.
The Guardian reported the male passenger used the device while he was on his laptop. He was seated in row 12 at the time.
A flight attendant asked the man to remove the device, and the passenger refused. The woman then stood up and threw a cup of water on him, according to an official.
The dispute escalated so much the flight was diverted to Chicago’s O’Hare international airport, Transportation Security Administration spokesman Ross Feinstein explained.
TSA officers and Chicago police met the flight, spoke to the male and female passengers and “deemed it a customer service issue,” Feinstein added. The TSA refused to name the passengers.
The plane then continued to Denver without either passenger, an hour and 38 minutes late.
The Standard reported both passengers were seated in the "economy plus section," a section which promises passengers four extra inches of room for their legs.
