article imageCouple treads water for 14 hours and survives

A Fort Lauderdale couple fell out of their moving boat and watched it pull away. They treaded water for 14 hours until they were rescued by an unexpected source.
The report comes from News 4 Jax that talked with those who had rescued them. They had apparently fallen out of their boat in Key Largo somehow while it was still in gear. Sean McGovern, 50, and Mellisa Morris, 52 then had to wait 14 hours while dealing with the cold and local jellyfish.
The couple would have been in significant trouble if two members of the Broward sheriff's office had not noticed the activity and wildlife surrounding them in the distance. They were in their own boat at the time relaxing after some rough work. By sheer chance they stumbled upon the two while they were using a T-shirt to flag people down and managed to save them.
Since they had unexpectedly fallen out of their boat they did not have their flares or other safety gear. While regulations vary in parts of the world most places do require a minimum amount of emergency items.
The news abounds with stories in which people did not survive ocean accidents like this one. Detective and Rescuer Adam Lee noted that they were "lucky" to say the least. While they may be a bit bothered at the loss of a boat they must be grateful for their unlikely rescue.
