Adelaide - A woman in Australia locked up 14 cats inside her home and they were forced to eat one another after they became hungry.
The cats were found in a home in Adelaide, Australia, back in September, 2015, but details about the incident have recently emerged. Footage of the scene shows animal rescue officers discovering decomposed remains of the animals. Out of all the cats, only one had managed to stay alive.
Trooper is the name given to the surviving cat. Trooper has since found a new home and has recovered from the ordeal.
On Tuesday, Port Adelaide Magistrates Court convicted the woman, who has mental health issues, of animal cruelty. She is also barred from keeping any animals.
Asides from being banned from owning animals, the 43-year-old woman was placed on a 12-month good behavior bond.
Andrea Lewis, the chief inspector, said the scene was a devastating sight and the remains of the cats were spread throughout the home. She said pet owners cannot simply abandoned their animals and they have a responsibility for their well-being.
Lewis added that people who can no longer care for their pets should ask friends and families if they can take them in. She also advised contacting the local council or bringing them to an animal shelter.
