article imageCar damaged at West Edmonton Mall after concrete falls on top

Edmonton - As she started her day on Monday this week, all that Raven Nickerson was expecting was a bit of snow falling from the sky.
Instead the winter day brought her large chunks of concrete; not from the sky, but from the ceiling of the West Edmonton Mall (WEM) parkade where she had parked her vehicle.
Nickerson found her car severely damaged after she completed her shift at the mall.
According to her, as she walked towards her car, she found something the size of a large brick lying on top of the vehicle. On closer look, she identified it as a piece of concrete. The piece of concrete resulted in the car ending up with a large dent on its top.
Though she was shocked, she moved around the car and found that another piece of concrete had shattered her rear window as well.
After finding a note left for her by the security personnel, she called and notified the mall authorities.
However, even though the week had almost ended, Nickerson found herself boarding the bus to arrive and leave for work. According to her, the mall authorities had not provided her with any transportation, though the incident that resulted in the damage of her car occurred inside the mall.
It could have happened when I am in the car or when someone was walking by. It is a matter that needs to be addressed seriously, Nickerson added.
Meanwhile, a spoke person from WEM stated that what happened was an isolated incident, and Edmonton’s frequent freezing and thawing weather this season might be the reason for it.
The spokesperson said that all of the parkade ceilings have been inspected, and engineers have not identified any damage anywhere. The affected location remains barricaded until repair works are finished.
