The find, last February 2013, has only now been revealed following a valuation that puts the historic treasure find down as one of the most valuable ever found in the US. The couple were walking their dog on the Gold Country property when they saw the stash buried in the shadows of a very old tree.
In all there were 1,427 coins dating from 1847 to 1894, none of which had been in circulation, in mint condition and placed in eight tin cans. The remarkable find was located in an area the couple, who are in their 40s, walk regularly for years.
The find has a face value of $27,000, but a closer look at the gold coins by experts said some of coins are so rare they could fetch almost $1 million each, reports
Mashable. The coins have only recently been authenticated by David Hall, a co-founder of a Professional Coin Grading Service in California.
The couple have chosen to remain anonymous and the exact location, said to be revealed only as a rural property in a hilly area of
California's Gold Country that they have lived on for years, is the only information being released.
The pair elected for anonymity to prevent a
modern-day gold rush on their land by hordes of treasure seekers armed with the latest metal detectors.
