A British man awoke from a coma, following a terrible car accident, speaking fluent French and thinking he was Matthew McConaughey.
Rory Curtis, a semi-professional footballer suffered a brain hemorrhage after his car crashed on a busy highway in Staffordshire, West England in August 2012. Medics at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital found that blood was leaking into his brain and was put in an induced coma for six days.
When he woke up, 25 year old Curtis was under the distinct impression that he was the 45-year-old Oscar winning actor. He also started speaking in fluent French with a perfect accent despite only having a very basic grasp from school when he was 13. Daily Mail reports:
At times I was in hospital thinking, ‘I can’t wait to get out of here and back to filming movies. When I went to the toilet I went to look in the mirror and I was shocked because I didn’t look like him, I didn’t know what I was looking at.
I didn't even do French at GCSE so haven't studied it since Year 9 - then all of a sudden I'm fluent in it. I can't explain how it happened.
Curtis left the hospital in November 2012, but required many psychological tests for two years because his brain injury was so complex and was also treated with an experimental drug developed by British Military to treat wounded soldiers.
Curtis is back to normal now and working at his aunt’s salon after he got trained as a barber. He still retains his ability to speak fluent French.
According to researchers, foreign accent syndrome usually results from a stroke but can also strike after head trauma. Although rare, there are 62 recorded cases since 1941.
